Chequers was a famous nightspot in Goulburn St, Sydney in the mid 1960s. It attracted the likes of Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jnr and Shirley Bassey amongst countless others. It was the place to see and be seen.
When the club closed in August 1970 a wake was held. A symbolic coffin was brought down the famous staircase by four blond pallbearers, and the piano that was the centrepiece of the place was played one last time - a dignified end for the instrument, which had suffered various indignities over the years. English comic Norman Wisdom ate four apples a night during his acts, and threw the cores into the open piano. The musicians said it wasn't their job to clean them out, and the cleaners didn't either. The cores stayed put for months.
It is now a Chinese Reflexology centre.
